Tortoise Baby Naming Contest!

ezgif.com-optimize.gif

Come meet the newest members of the Science Mill family and help us name them! We have three unbelievably adorable tortoise hatchlings and we need your help naming them.

Visit the Science Mill between August 10th - August 18th and be the first to meet our new hatchlings and give us your best tortoise name suggestions. The winners will receive two (2) free admission tickets and a Science Mill t-shirt!

On March 25, 2019, the Science Mill’s 12 year old African Spurred Tortoise, Tortilla, laid a clutch of 24 eggs. Science Mill biologists dug up and placed the eggs in an incubator to protect them from predators. Over the following months, the eggs were observed for signs of development. Not all eggs were viable, but we’re thrilled to report that after 106 days in the incubator, six eggs hatched between July 9-12th.

Because African Spurred Tortoises can live up to 100 years, it is important that they are cared for responsibly. The Science Mill staff biologists will care for three of the tortoise hatchlings (in addition to the three adult tortoises we already have at the Science Mill). When the other three tortoise babies are old enough to leave the Mill, they will join homes of Science Mill staff and friends who will care for them responsibly.

Please join us at the Science Mill August 10th - 18th and be the first to welcome our tiny new Science Mill family members. Plus, don’t miss our daily tortoise feedings at 12:15pm when we feed leafy greens, fruits and veggies to our adult tortoises, Speedy, Tortilla, and Miss Jiff. Learn about these amazing creatures with a Q&A by one of our staff biologists.
