About the Science Mill
Since its founding in 2015, the Science Mill has established itself as a state-of-the-art, nonprofit science museum designed and dedicated to introducing, engaging, and exciting all students in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) through hands-on, interactive exhibits, and STEM programs. Located in Johnson City, Texas, in the repurposed, historic 1880-era Johnson City Grist Mill, we are a fully experiential museum, where kids learn by doing, experimenting, discovering, and most importantly, by being curious. In six years, we have attracted over 250,000 visitors, including students from school field trips and family visitors. In addition, we have conducted 110 summer STEM camps throughout the region, engaging more than 2,200 campers. The Science Mill operates on an annual budget of approximately $2.5 million and has a Silver GuideStar rating.
The Science Mill's mission supports our vision of a world where all kids, regardless of economic status, location, gender, or race, have equitable access to STEM programs. Our programs give students the support and confidence needed to reach their full potential in future STEM careers and become part of a science-literate community and problem solvers of the future. The Science Mill brings a special blend of entrepreneurial spirit and progressive educational programs and platforms to economically disadvantaged students living in both rural and urban underserved communities throughout south and central Texas. Our vision includes expanding throughout Texas, ultimately establishing a national presence. Diversity both within the Science Mill team and in the communities that we serve is a continuing goal and focus of our organizational efforts.
REGISTRAR
The Registrar serves as the main point of contact for Field Trips, Group Visits, Birthday Parties, the coordination of the fulfillment of Labs on the Go, and administrative support for our SCI Camp/Club program. Under the direction of the Associate Director of Programs, this position joins an agile team that works on the museum’s front lines, ensuring that all administrative processes move smoothly and providing exemplary customer service to everyone they encounter.
PLANT SPECIALIST
Do you love plants and talking about them? Do you also love making a difference in your local community? Then we want to meet you!
The Science Mill is looking for a Plant Specialist. This position is responsible for growing and maintaining a diverse collection of plants in both greenhouse and traditional planting settings. Additionally, this person will be responsible for interacting with families and students to discuss aquaponics and its role in food production. The ideal candidate loves everything about plants, is willing to learn about different methods to grow plants, and be able to communicate their expertise to visitors that come to the Science Mill.
Visitor Services Team - weekENDS
The Science Mill, a STEM science museum located in Johnson City, TX is seeking energetic, hard-working individuals to join our Visitor Services team as Exhibit Explainers. Explainers actively engage with museum visitors of all ages to encourage interactive learning and exploration of the exhibits throughout the museum. Our Visitor Services team is also responsible for creating a safe and clean environment for everyone who comes to the Science Mill. Candidates for this position should enjoy working with children. It would be the ideal job for retirees, or someone interested in pursuing a career in education or a STEM field.
